I am canvassing once again for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In the past, I have done this because both Scott and I have family history of heart disease. I also did it to raise awareness, to support research and to show my kids that there are other reasons to fundraise other than sporting and travel adventures.
But this year it is more personal than ever.
In April, my friend and colleague suffered a massive stroke and did not survive. We are still in shock and trying to understand how a young, healthy, vibrant and smart woman could be taken from us so suddenly. She leaves behind a grieving family and a huge hole at work and in the community.
Shortly after, another close friend of mine suffered a heart attack following surgery. I was her escort when she was medivaced to Edmonton for treatment. At the Royal Alex Hospital - CK Hui Heart Centre I witnessed first hand the difference that research dollars play in developing new techniques and procedures and in saving lives.
This year the Heart and Stroke campaign is focussed on women:
- the #1 cause of premature death in women in Canada is heart disease and stroke
- 54% of women who experience heart attack symptoms have them go unrecognized
- Stroke is more deadly for women
- 2/3 of all heart disease and stroke clinical research focuses on men
I encourage you all to get informed, and make an effort to eat healthy, reduce stress and get active!
Thanks for any and all support.
